Tesla’s Seven-Seat Model Y Is Coming Back — But Don’t Expect Extra Room
Tesla is preparing to reintroduce a seven-seat version of the Model Y, and while it could offer families more flexibility, don’t expect any major changes when it comes to interior space.
The upcoming three-row variant will be part of the refreshed Model Y “Juniper,” and Tesla reportedly confirmed the news in an email sent to customers. While the company hasn’t released official photos of the new seating layout, the previous version gives us a good idea of what to expect: a very tight third row, best suited for small children rather than full-sized adults.
For families who need the occasional extra seat, though, this could still be a practical option—especially considering that the rear seats in earlier Model Y versions folded flat to preserve cargo space. There’s no official word yet on whether the same design will carry over, but it’s a likely bet.

This move comes as Tesla looks to spark renewed interest in its lineup amid softening demand in several key markets. Bringing back the seven-seater—even if it’s a squeeze—could help the Model Y compete more directly with larger electric SUVs like the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, even if it falls short on space and comfort by comparison.
The seven-seat configuration has had a spotty history with the Model Y. Originally offered in 2021, it was quietly dropped in 2022, returned briefly in 2024, and now appears to be making another comeback with the Juniper update. According to a customer email shared on social media, the company describes the new version as offering “seating for up to seven and enough room for everyone’s gear. ”
Tesla hasn’t revealed pricing for the configuration yet, but based on previous offerings, expect the third-row option to add a few thousand dollars to the total cost.
Also worth noting: Tesla is reportedly working on a new Performance version of the Model Y, said to deliver 510 horsepower—potentially adding more excitement to the Juniper lineup as the company looks to hold onto its EV crown. For now, large families or weekend warriors ferrying kids to soccer practice might want to keep an eye on this release. Just don’t plan on putting any tall passengers in the back.
