BMW Built the iX5 an Accessory Catalog Before Most Buyers Have Seen One in the Metal

The first all-electric BMW X5 is arriving with something most new EVs never get at launch: a full parts catalog. BMW has rolled out two accessory ranges for the fifth-generation X5 and the new BMW iX5 at the same time, and the electric car gets the same M Performance aero kit, the same 21 to 23-inch wheel options, and the same roof boxes as its combustion siblings. That sounds like a footnote in a press release. It is actually a statement about how BMW sees the iX5, and a few of these parts matter more on an electric SUV than they ever did on a diesel one.

Day-one parity is the real headline

Think about how electric variants usually get treated. The EV shows up a year after the petrol version, the accessory shelf is half empty, and the aftermarket takes another year to catch up. BMW is doing the opposite here. Every M Performance component, every functional accessory, is listed for the new X5 and the iX5 together, from the first day of sales. If you order an iX5, you can spec the carbon splitter and the winter wheel set on the same form as someone buying the V8.

That matters because it tells you the iX5 is not a compliance car or a niche trim. It is a mainline X5 that happens to run on electrons, and BMW expects owners to personalize it the same way X5 owners always have. Given how strong the X5 aftermarket has been for two decades, that is a bigger deal than any single carbon fiber part.

The aero kit, and why aramid is the clever bit

The M Performance package for the iX5 covers the usual suspects. There are front trim inserts in carbon fiber that sit inside the illuminated frame of the new Iconic Glow kidney grille, a three-piece carbon front splitter, a gloss black roof spoiler, and carbon flow blades that flank the rear diffuser. Standard M Performance fare, executed at the level you would expect.

The interesting choice is the material for the mirror caps and the rear diffuser. Those are made from aramid rather than carbon. It looks like carbon, has a similar weave and similar strength, but unlike carbon it does not block electromagnetic signals. That means the sensors packed into the mirror housings and the antennas that trigger the hands-free tailgate keep working with the parts fitted.

On an iX5 this is not a trivial detail. Modern EVs are wrapped in radar, ultrasonic sensors, cameras, and keyless antennas, and the mirror housings are prime real estate for them. A carbon cap in the wrong place is a great way to break your blind spot monitor. BMW solving this at the factory, with a material that keeps the carbon look, is exactly the kind of engineering care that separates OEM accessories from the cheap replicas that flood the market six months later.

21 to 23-inch wheels: gorgeous, and a genuine range decision

The wheel range runs from 21 to 23 inches in both summer and winter complete sets, with the headline piece being the 23-inch M Performance Y-spoke 1110 M Bicolor in Jet Black with gloss milled faces. It is a striking wheel, and on the iX5’s proportions it will look like it belongs on a concept car.

Here is the part BMW’s marketing will not spell out for you. On the petrol X5, going from 21 to 23 inches costs you a little ride comfort and a little fuel economy that most owners never notice. On the iX5, the same upgrade takes a measurable bite out of range, because bigger, heavier wheels with wider, lower-profile tires add rolling resistance and rotational mass that the battery has to overcome every single mile. Every EV on sale shows this in its official figures, and there is no reason the iX5 will be different.

Our take: if you want the 23s, buy the 23s, but do it knowingly. The 21-inch winter set is the smart daily choice for anyone who actually relies on the car’s range in cold months, when the battery is already working against the weather. Keep the big wheels for summer.

The roof box is the EV accessory that actually earns its money

The functional side of the catalog is led by the new BMW Aero roof box, available in 350, 450, and 550-liter sizes. Each one gains 30 liters over the box it replaces, and BMW has reworked the shape for better aerodynamics. On a combustion X5, that is a nice-to-have. On the iX5, it is the whole point.

Roof boxes are brutal on EV range. A poorly shaped box can knock a noticeable chunk off a long-distance run, because drag scales with the square of speed and highway driving is exactly where you want the range most. A box designed alongside the car, with attention to how air flows over the iX5’s roofline, will still cost you something, but far less than a generic box bolted on from a hardware store. If you plan on family road trips in the iX5, this is the accessory to spend on before any carbon trim.

BMW pairs the boxes with matching Aero and Flex luggage bags sized to fill each box efficiently, made from ballistic polyester with nubuck accents, padded shoulder straps, and a separate shoe bag. There is also a 300-liter rear box that mounts on the BMW cycle carrier and takes two Flex bags, which is a smarter solution for shorter trips since a hitch-mounted box sits in the car’s wake and costs less range than anything on the roof.

Screens for the back seats, done properly

The Travel & Comfort System on the front seatbacks comes standard with a magnetic phone holder, and BMW adds two tablet holders as options. The Pro version has an extra joint for more adjustment and silver accents on the surface. A separate smartphone adapter clicks into either holder and takes phones up to 7 inches while leaving the ports accessible.

On an EV that will spend time parked at chargers with kids in the back, a solid tablet mount is more useful than it sounds. Add the waterproof all-weather floor mats and the waterproof luggage compartment mat and you have the practical baseline sorted.

What the iX5 does not get, and why that is fine

The one item in the catalog reserved for the combustion side is the planned M Performance silencer system and carbon tailpipe finishers for a future V8 M Performance model. The iX5 obviously has no use for either. What is telling is that the iX5 loses nothing else. Every visual and functional upgrade that makes an X5 look and work like an M Performance car is available on the electric one from launch.

The bottom line: BMW is treating the iX5 as a proper X5, not a side project. For buyers, the smart shopping order is roof box first, aramid mirror caps and aero kit second, and the 23-inch wheels only once you have made peace with the range they cost. Spend it that way and you end up with an electric SUV that looks the part and still gets you where the charger is.
