The Lucid Air is set to be powered with a 900-volt system and the carmaker is promising more than 643 kilometers (400 miles) of range on a single charge

With the production-ready Lucid Air slowly creeping towards its public debut at April’s New York Auto Show. And now, the electric vehicle manufacturer has announced that their production vehicles will use LG Chem’s cylindrical battery cells. According to information revealed to Electrek, the company chose these battery cells for two reasons: they offer the perfect level of efficiency for the standard version of the Air and second, they will be able to avoid potential production bottlenecks by using the cylindrical cells as opposed to the pouch-style ones.

The latter is good for any potential Lucid Air customer, as we’ve been seeing lots of news about LG Chem and their problems with battery supply issues which resulted in some production delays for manufacturers like Jaguar, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. And all of them were forced to slow down production for some of their upcoming or popular EVs due to LG’s batteries. But, all of them use LG’s pouch-style cells, as opposed to the cylindrical cells that Lucid is slated to use.

Furthermore,  Lucid announced that it will optimize the battery cells to meet or exceed goals for range, energy density, recharge/discharge. That, combined with avoiding any production issues might as well be what helps the carmaker complete its sales and delivery goals, avoiding any potential pitfalls relating to not meeting delivery deadlines.

For the launch, Lucid Air will arrive as a launch model dubbed the ‘Dream Edition’. The car will be powered with a 900-volt system and the carmaker is promising more than 643 kilometers (400 miles) of range on a single charge. In turn, if Lucid can make good on their promises, we can see the Air as one of the hottest EVs to hit the market in 2020, finally bringing some much-needed competition to Tesla in the luxury EV market range.
